Falcons Split Doubleheader with North Alabama

The University of Montevallo baseball team (6-8) split a doubleheader with former conference rival the University of North Alabama (6-4). The Falcons won game one 6-1 and fell in the nightcap 9-2. The Falcons were led by sophomore Duston Daugherty (Hoover, Ala./Hoover) who went 4-for-7 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI. Senior Justin Aaron (Morris, Ala./Mortimer Jordan) pitched six of the seven innings in game one while striking out two. He picked up his first win of the season as his record improves to 1-0.

UM picked up 11 hits in game one while scoring six runs but were only able to muster three hits in the second game while driving in two runs.

Senior Kevin Garcia (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Dunedin) and freshmen Austin Dubberly (Helena, Ala./Pelham) and Chandler Tyree (Oxford, Ala./Oxford) each picked up two hits on the day. Six Falcons picked up RBIs while senior Andy Revell (Albertville, Ala./Albertville) led the squad with two. Daugherty, Garcia, Dubberly, junior Josh Dabbs (Hueytown, Ala./Hueytown) and senior Chris Sosebee (Warrior, Ala./Sumiton Christian) all had one RBI each.

Senior John Michael Caraway (Trussville, Ala./Clay-Chalkville) came in for the final inning of the first game and struck out three batters while allowing just two hits.

Junior Joey Noro (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) took home the loss in game two as he pitched 4.0 innings while striking out one and walking four. Senior Kyle Johanson (Bowman, Ga./Elbert County) pitched the final 2.0 innings while walking one.

UM fell behind early in game one as the Lions took a 1-0 lead after the first inning. The Falcons took control in the third as they scored three runs. Tyree, junior Scottie Deason (Hoover, Ala./Spain Park) and Daugherty opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back singles. Daugherty's single was able to drive home Tyree. Dubberly then stepped up and drove home Deason with an RBI groundout. Garcia then hit a single that scored Daugherty to wrap up the inning.

The Falcons tacked on three more runs in the fifth as Garcia, Daugherty and Sosebee all singled. Sosebee's single drove home Garcia. Revell then hit a two RBI double to put the Falcons ahead 6-1. The pitching staff took over from their as they shut down the Lions in the final two innings to capture a 6-1 victory.

UM gave up eight runs over the first three innings of game two and were never able to recover. UNA tacked on another run in the fifth before the Falcons could even cross home plate. UM;s two runs came in the sixth as back-to-back walks set up the two runs. Dubberly scored on a groundout by Dabbs while Garcia scored on a wild pitch.

The Falcons will return to action Saturday, Feb. 27 at 1:00 p.m. as they host USC Aiken in their Peach Belt Conference opener. USCA is 5-6 on the season and 1-3 on the road.
