As has been the tradition for a dozen years, the Higher Education Partnership, representing the students, faculty, staff, alumni and administrators of the state's four-year universities, is sponsoring the annual Higher Education Day. The 2010 program is set for March 4 at the Alabama StateHouse.

The 2010 advocacy event is themed Leaving Your Mark and will deliver a strong message that the universities are calling for equity and fairness in funding. With an Education Trust Fund budget that is built on yet to be resolved input from Washington D.C., there is a great need for the elected officials to hear from the university voices. The expected crowd of 2000+ participants from UAB, Troy University, The University of South Alabama, Auburn University, Auburn Montgomery, UAHuntsville, The University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University, Alabama A&M, The University of West Alabama, Alabama State University, The University of North Alabama and The University of Montevallo will remind the state's leaders that their institutions are leaving a difference-making impression on the state.

Higher Ed Day will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. from the Cramton Bowl area of Montgomery and move to the StateHouse. The University of North Alabama band and supporters from all 13 public universities will march to the StateHouse to begin delivering the reminder that their institutions "Leave a Mark."

After the parade, the traditional rally will begin at 11 a.m. and last until noon. Lunch on the grounds will follow. During the rally, the Alabama State University and Jacksonville State University bands will perform. Governor Bob Riley, Lieutenant Governor Jim Folsom, Speaker Seth Hammett, Senator Hank Sanders, Representative Richard Lindsey and others will speak.

Universities are committed to making sure that the state's elected officials understand the importance of the investment in higher education. They will illustrate the importance by reminding legislators of the fact that universities leave a mark on the social, cultural, and economic fiber of Alabama.

The principle goal of the rally is to advocate for equity in funding. Too often, public universities find themselves bearing the burden of the depressed economy and that is not fair.

The events of Higher Education Day will bring the largest annual political rally to the Montgomery area and will put faces on the issues facing higher education. The Higher Education Partnership is pleased to remind all of the state's elected leaders that the universities are a diverse collection of people that are committed to leaving a mark of progress on Alabama.
