The Club That Must Not Be Named
The students at this fine university have finally done it-gone and created a Harry Potter club, with the appropriate title, The Club That Must Not Be Named. It began as all great things do-a simple idea among friends. The friends in this case were Hannah Ronan-Daniell and Jessica Richard, two avid Harry Potter fans who easily found many others to join their cause. Though not officially a club according to the University of Montevallo (because club-hood takes a least a year to establish), they already have forty members in the group on Facebook, and many more are interested in playing Quidditch once it is correctly organized.
To begin a club in the Spring Semester can be very tricky, because as we all know College Night complicates most schedules to the point where having consistent meetings for any group on campus is very difficult. The meetings for The Club That Must Not Be Named have been meeting every other Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in SUB, but at the most current meeting, there was talk of trying to find a time that would best suit everyone. They also engage in competitive rounds of Harry Potter trivia at each meeting, in which correctly answering a question rewards your House (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin) with a point. The goal is for your House to have the most points by the end of the semester, because the House with the most points will have a party thrown in their honor.
Though this club is young and still virtually unheard of, the leaders have big plans, including joining together with the Facebook group Bring Quidditch to Montevallo in order to eventually create a Quidditch team good enough to play against teams from other universities. But the group isn't stopping there. They have already been to UAB for the Harry Potter's World: Renaissance Science, Magic & Medicine exhibition. Held at UAB's Museum of the Health Sciences, this exhibition showcased many medieval myths and legends that J.K. Rowling used as the base for the fictional world of Harry Potter. The club has also been known to support local "Wizard Rock" groups such as Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills, The Whomping Willows, and Fred Lives. At the show on February 16, a few of the club members met Harry Potter Alliance member Elizabeth Bernstein, who is interested in starting a chapter in Alabama.
