Due to shortcomings in state revenue for the last fiscal year, Governor Sonny Purdue called for a 3.5 percent budget cut, effective July 2008, to be applied to this fiscal year for all state colleges. Although Gov. Purdue only asked for 3.5 percent, the University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll Davis has required campuses to cut 5 to 6 percent from expenses.

Judy Bense, the newly appointed interim president of the University of West Florida, is one smart cookie. She has a doctorate in anthropology and archaeology and has been a fixture at UWF for 28 years.

Bense came to UWF in 1980 with the hopes of building a nationally ranked archaeology program based on the sites surrounding the area.
